Our Environmental and Climate Protection Goals
Our Environmental and Climate Protection Goals
At Kaufland, considering the environment is a key component of our company philosophy. Climate change is one of the major challenges of our time and one that requires action to be taken at all levels of society. Biodiversity is the foundation of all life on Earth. By working closely with our suppliers to implement sustainable practices, not only are we preserving resources for future generations, we are also actively contributing to a resilient environment.
Our goal is to reduce the environmental impacts in our supply chain, particularly greenhouse gas emissions, in order to support climate protection. To this end, we have set ourselves ambitious reduction targets that we can only achieve with the support of our suppliers. We are also working closely with our suppliers to guarantee deforestation- and conversion-free supply chains.
Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions along our
supply chains:
•By 2034: 42.4% in FLAG and 35% in E&I
•By 2050: 72% in FLAG and 90% in E&I
The development of strategies and targets around biodiversity and the planning and implementation of appropriate measures by 2025.
Information Material about the EUDR
On December 30, 2025, the EU Deforestation Regulation applies, which affects both us and many of our business partners. The aim of the EUDR is to ensure that products that are traded and consumed on the EU market do not contribute to global deforestation or forest degradation. It is part of the wider EU climate policy and the European Green Deal to combat climate change and biodiversity loss. Please check the official legal text here.

Credible and Verifiable Measures to Protect Shared Water Resources
Since 2023, we have been a proud member of the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) – a global membership collaboration comprising businesses, NGOs, and the public sector, which promotes the responsible use of water resources along the value chain. You can find an overview of our approach to the topic of water and which measures we have already put in place in our Water Guidelines.

Responsible Procurement of Goods, Taking Animal Welfare Aspects into Account
When it comes to products of animal origin, we are striving to achieve more responsible production practices and improve animal welfare in livestock farming. We believe it is our duty to tackle global challenges, such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and improving animal welfare.

Information materials on climate protection
Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time—it affects not only the business environment but also poses significant challenges for all of us. As part of the Schwarz Group’s commitment to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) in 2020, Kaufland has set ambitious climate targets to limit global warming in line with the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement. However, effective climate action can only succeed through collaboration, which is why we want to go this path down together with our business partners.
Please refer to our informational materials for details on climate protection, climate targets, and the requirements for our business partners.
